Research summary

In the recovery process from catastrophic disasters, it is important to plan the spatial recovery plan not simply for recovery of the original condition or improvement of the disaster prevention performance, but for creation of new space and place, which solve simultaneously the preexisting industrial, environmental and social problems of the region.

Base on the awareness of these issues, we are promoting studies on the construction of physical spatial planning theory related to the recovery from catastrophic disaster, the establishment of its implementing system and the development of the management technique. To give the concrete examples, we examined the effective citizen participation process by using preexisting community council. We also clarified the planning theory of tsunami defense facilities.

We are, at the same time, engaged in the practical planning support activities in the affected area in cooperation with the abovementioned research activities.
