 The new Project Area/Unit system of IRIDeS has started since April 2016 to enhance our research activities and to support local needs in society appropriately through various fields of natural science, and social environment, culture, and history.

  As we have started the new system, we will reformulate and utilize Tsunami Trace Database and disaster archives (Michinoku Shin-Roku-Den), systematize preparedness against complex disasters based on the lessons learned from the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, and contribute to domestic and international disaster management (Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction).

[Hazard Process] Clarification of generation mechanisms, prediction and mitigation of natural disasters <Motoyuki KIDO / Disaster Science Division>

Natural Hazard Assessment  <Assesses natural hazards, especially huge earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions based on observation and modeling.>

Hazards and Damage Evaluation and Mitigation <Proposes evaluation methods for hazards and damage by compiling real time observation, database and historical information, and practical systems for mitigation.>

[Information Research] Development and application of natural disaster archives <Takeshi SATO / Disaster Infromation, Management and Public Collaboration Division>

Disaster Archive <Collects and organizes materials related to natural disasters such as historical documents, monuments, and photos. Develops archive systems and organizes the stored data as an international standard for use of the public for disaster reduction.>
