Research Activities

In addition to the intensification of natural disasters and the spread of large-scale infections, the risks in cities and regions are increasing due to the influence of global environmental changes, and responses are required. This joint Research Lab of AEON Disaster-Resilient and Environmentally-Friendly City Creation was established in October 2021 with the aim of creating safe and secure resilient communities in which cities and regions can be created by developing a lush environment while also serving as a regional disaster prevention base.

First, the AEON Joint Research Lab was established in 2021, setting three themes: "Disaster Prevention and Mitigation," "Forest Design," and "Infectious Disease Countermeasures," and subcommittees were established to carry out joint research activities.

After three years, when the research period was renewed in October 2024, in light of the research results and research content that needed to be continued, "Infectious Disease Countermeasures" was integrated with "Disaster Prevention and Mitigation," "Forest Design" was terminated, and a new regional collaboration theme was needed. Therefore, the research content will be the following two new themes.

Set two themes: "Disaster Prevention and Mitigation" and "Regional Collaboration Base";

1. Consideration and proposal of disaster prevention and mitigation strategies

Aiming to create a community that can provide safety and security even in the event of a disaster, we will consider new disaster prevention and mitigation initiatives through the creation and implementation of evacuation plans and BCPs, early safety confirmation by installing seismometers, cooperation with surrounding facilities, and enhanced support in the event of a disaster.

2. Support for the formation of a regional collaboration hub

While creating a comfortable space to stay surrounded by greenery, we aim to recreate the bustle and vitality of the former Amamiya (雨宮)Campus of Tohoku University in an outdoor space. To that end, we will plan and implement workshops and events, develop an environment where people can relax and stay freely, and support the creation of a collaboration hub that has connections with the local community, including surrounding educational institutions, while creating a seamless space with the town (people).
