My most recent collaboration with Tohoku University is through an NSF-JST funded US-Japan joint research project that aims at applying and expanding the concept of “digital twins” into disaster science. The project envisions the design of a virtual platform and tools that can 1) execute physics-driven hazard simulations developed by experts in U.S./Japan using integrated geospatial data, 2) design techniques for efficient integration of simulations into database systems, and 3) explore machine learning techniques to generate exposure estimates and damage information using hazard simulations and the diverse sets of data.
