Risk Evaluation and Disaster Mitigation Research Division

Division Head: TODA Shinji
Research Activities
Disasters are caused by how much human society is exposed to and how much our social structure is vulnerable to natural hazards such as earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, and meteorological and outer-space phenomena. In modern society, the risk of complex disasters is also increasing. To contribute to elucidation of these natural disasters, prediction and proactive measures, response, and quick recovery, our research division integrates science and engineering to conduct field surveys of damage, various observations, numerical simulations of natural phenomena and disaster processes, advanced remote sensing, visualization, and development of robot-related technologies. Furthermore, to return these cutting-edge research outcomes to society, we will collaborate and cooperate with various organizations in Japan and overseas, and work on concrete and practical proposals that lead to disaster prevention and mitigation, as well as disaster prevention education and enlightenment activities.
