The Tsunami Engineering Research Lab at IRIDeS, Tohoku University, and the Regulatory Standard and Research Department, Secretariat of Nuclear Regulation Authority, in collaboration with tsunami experts, have developed a “Tsunami Trace Database in Japan” to be used for the safety evaluation of disaster-related matters including nuclear power plants. The database holds approximately 30,000 records related to historical and scientific data of past tsunamis, with enhanced reliability confirmed by tsunami experts. The database management system is based on Web GIS for users to search and extract highly reliable trace data according to their purposes. The data and outcomes are open to the public onine to be utilized not only by tsunami researchers and nuclear safety institutes, but also by municipalities and residents in coastal areas for tsunami countermeasures and preparedness. This database is also linked to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)/International Seismic Safety Center (ISSC) website because of its international usefulness.
